Leveraging Technology for English Language Learning Beyond the Classroom
Dr. Jason Lim Wei Rong , Senior Lecturer, Department of English Language and Literature, National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, SingaporeAbstract
The evolving landscape of English language learning increasingly recognizes the limitations of traditional classroom settings and the vast potential of technology to extend educational opportunities. This article explores the various ways in which technological integration can facilitate and enrich English learning experiences outside the confines of the classroom. While classroom instruction remains foundational, learners often face challenges, particularly in developing crucial skills like speaking, due to limited authentic practice opportunities [2]. This conceptual review synthesizes existing literature to identify key technological tools and platforms that empower self-directed learning, enhance engagement, and provide immersive language exposure. Findings indicate that digital tools, mobile applications, and online communities offer diverse avenues for vocabulary acquisition, grammar practice, pronunciation refinement [6], listening comprehension [8], and speaking practice [7]. The integration of technology supports autonomous learning by providing accessible, personalized, and interactive content, aligning with the observed enjoyment learners derive from outdoor and less formal learning activities [1]. This approach necessitates a shift in pedagogical strategies, emphasizing teacher professional development to leverage these tools effectively [3]. Ultimately, technology serves as a powerful catalyst for fostering continuous English language development, bridging the gap between formal instruction and real-world application, and addressing the challenges learners face outside the classroom.
