SACRED TEMPLES IN THE TOURISM INDUSTRY: BALANCING REVERENCE AND PROFIT

M Rudi Mahardika , Department of Hotel Operation, Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha, Bali, Indonesia

Abstract

This paper examines the growing trend of using sacred temples as tourist attractions and the complex balance between religious reverence and economic profit. As global tourism continues to expand, sacred temples—historically sites of worship and spiritual significance—are increasingly becoming part of the tourism industry. This study explores the implications of this transformation, addressing both the potential benefits and challenges. On one hand, tourism can bring economic opportunities, increase awareness, and foster cultural exchange. On the other hand, it raises concerns about the commercialization of sacred spaces, the impact on local communities, and the erosion of religious significance. Through a critical analysis of case studies and interviews with stakeholders, this paper discusses how temples navigate the tension between preserving their sacred nature and capitalizing on the influx of tourists. The findings emphasize the need for a sustainable approach that respects both religious traditions and the economic realities of modern tourism, suggesting policies for balancing these often competing interests.
