THE USE OF PRAGMATIC COMPETENCE IN EVERYDAY COMMUNICATION IN THE GERMAN LANGUAGE

Makhsudakhon Abbasovna Saidova , Senior Lecturer, Oriental University, Uzbekistan

Abstract

This article examines the importance of pragmatic competence in everyday communication in the German language and its impact on achieving effective and contextually appropriate interaction. Pragmatic competence refers to the ability to select suitable linguistic forms, apply socio-cultural norms, and choose communication strategies based on the interlocutor’s social status, the level of formality, and the situational context. The paper analyzes key pragmatic features used in daily German communication, including the choice between Sie and du forms of address, the use of speech acts such as requests, refusals, and expressions of gratitude, as well as softened modality, intonation patterns, and the interpretation of implicit meanings. The findings demonstrate that successful communication in German depends not only on grammatical knowledge but also on well-developed pragmatic competence, which enables speakers to interact naturally, respectfully, and effectively in diverse social situations.
