Iron deficiency anemia is one of the most common blood diseases. This condition occurs when there is a lack of iron in the body, and as a result, the amount of hemoglobin decreases. A decrease in hemoglobin affects the structure and function of erythrocytes. Therefore, certain changes are observed in erythrocytes in this disease.

This article provides information about the microscopic appearance of erythrocytes and their changes in iron deficiency anemia. With iron deficiency, erythrocytes become smaller than usual (microcytosis), their color appears paler (hypochromia), and their shape is also not the same. In addition, the process of formation of new erythrocytes in the bone marrow increases.

Knowledge of these changes that occur in iron deficiency anemia is important for the correct understanding and timely diagnosis of the disease.
