Diabetic retinopathy is one of the most dangerous and common complications of diabetes in the eye, and it is recognized as the leading cause of blindness worldwide. Most patients with diabetes develop this complication over time, and while previously high glucose levels, vascular changes, hypoxia, or oxidative stress were considered the main factors, today scientific studies have confirmed that genetic factors, along with inflammatory markers, play a leading role in the pathogenesis of this disease.
