MODERN EPIDEMIOLOGY AND PREVENTION STRATEGIES OF MEASLES IN THE PEDIATRIC POPULATION

Abstract

 Measles remains one of the most highly contagious viral pathogens affecting the pediatric population globally, despite the existence of a highly effective and safe live-attenuated vaccine. The recent resurgence of measles outbreaks in various global regions highlights a critical vulnerability in current public health frameworks and pediatric immunization programs. This study aims to analyze the modern epidemiological characteristics of measles in children and evaluate the underlying factors contributing to the recent epidemiological shifts, with a primary focus on preventive strategies. Through a comprehensive retrospective analysis of pediatric patient records and regional epidemiological data, we investigated the demographic distribution, vaccination status, and clinical outcomes of recent measles clusters. Our findings reveal a significant epidemiological shift characterized by a higher incidence rate among unvaccinated infants and pre-school-aged children, often leading to elevated rates of hospitalization due to complications such as secondary bacterial pneumonia and acute otitis media. The data unequivocally demonstrates that localized outbreaks are directly correlated with pockets of suboptimal vaccine coverage, driven largely by escalating vaccine hesitancy and recent disruptions in routine healthcare services. Restoring the herd immunity threshold to above ninety-five percent is paramount for preventing endemic transmission and protecting vulnerable demographics. Modern prevention strategies must evolve beyond routine clinical administration to incorporate targeted community education, rapid outbreak response protocols, and the continuous active surveillance of immunization gaps.
