
THE CARBON FOOTPRINT OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES: ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMIC ASPECTS

The rapid development of digital technologies has transformed modern society, yet it has also introduced new environmental and economic challenges. The carbon footprint of digital infrastructure—including data centers, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and global communication networks—continues to grow, contributing significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. This paper explores the ecological implications of digital technologies, focusing on energy consumption, e-waste generation, and resource depletion. In addition, it examines the economic aspects, highlighting both the costs of sustainable technological transformation and the potential benefits of adopting green IT solutions. The findings suggest that balancing digital progress with environmental sustainability requires integrated policies, innovative energy-efficient technologies, and international cooperation.
