This article discusses the use of fiction and poems in teaching German as a second foreign language to students of higher educational institutions, its importance, the functions of literary texts, as well as the criteria and difficulties in choosing texts in German language classes. In the introduction of the article, it is highlighted with the help of examples that the use of poemsin the teaching of the German language is very important for the students’ language skills, cultural understanding and their development as well-rounded individuals.
          In the main part, the communicative, formative, cognitive, and many other functions of poemsare emphasized and the positive results of this are justified, as well as the tasks and tasks related to teaching the German language on the basis of fiction in the course of the lesson. sequence is given. Emphasizing that the criteria for choosing a text are always important and that every teacher should pay special attention to it, it is necessary to choose from examples of fiction in accordance with the level of knowledge and interests of students, and in turn, there are many difficulties of this process. In the conclusion, some recommendations for teachers are given based on all the given information and opinions.
