ENDING THE WAR ON DRUGS: A PATH TO SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC EQUITY

Henry Schneider , Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany

Abstract

The war on drugs has perpetuated significant social and economic inequities, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities worldwide. This paper argues that decriminalizing drugs is a critical step toward addressing these disparities. By shifting from punitive measures to a public health-centered approach, societies can reduce mass incarceration, mitigate systemic racism, and reallocate resources to vital social services. Decriminalization also opens pathways for economic empowerment, fostering community investment and reducing the financial burden on law enforcement and judicial systems. This analysis highlights global case studies, explores the socio-economic benefits of decriminalization, and outlines a roadmap for equitable drug policy reform.
