Abstract

Glutathione, often hailed as the master antioxidant, plays a pivotal role in maintaining cellular health and protecting against oxidative stress. This review delves into the multifaceted functions of glutathione, exploring its intricate mechanisms of action and its profound impact on health and disease. Through its ability to neutralize free radicals and detoxify harmful substances, glutathione serves as a crucial defender against oxidative damage and inflammation. Moreover, glutathione's involvement in various physiological processes, including immune function, DNA repair, and protein synthesis, underscores its significance in maintaining overall well-being. Dysregulation of glutathione levels has been implicated in numerous pathological conditions, ranging from neurodegenerative diseases to cancer and aging-related disorders. Understanding the intricate interplay between glutathione and cellular homeostasis offers insights into potential therapeutic strategies for combating oxidative stress-related ailments. This review synthesizes current knowledge on glutathione biology, highlighting its mastery as an antioxidant and its therapeutic implications for promoting health and mitigating disease.
